| BEFORE PURCHASING A PUPPY PLEASE READ ALL OTHER INFORMATION ON THIS LINK PAGE Remember that "A Dog is for LIFE" not for convenience. Don't buy a puppy without researching the breed and believing that you will give that dog a home for life. Only take on an animal where you are confident you can provide for it Neuter your pets if you do not plan to show or breed) to reduce the chances of unwanted litters - controversial, but unfortunately one of the causes for rescue organisations having to care for so many unwanted animals Microchip your pet so if it does go missing it can easily be traced back to you. Compulsory in N. Ireland. 'From that date (April 6, 2016) in England owners will need to have their dog microchipped and registered on one of the authorised commercial databases available; owners will have to register the details of any new owner before they sell or give the dog away. Any owner will have to keep their contact details up to date on the microchip databases. 'Defra is working with database providers and microchip suppliers to ensure minimum standards of service for commercial databases and standards of microchips, and that there is updated implantation guidance and training available as well as a one-stop enquiry point for microchipped lost and found dogs.' Make sure you can afford veterinary treatment before taking on an animal BREEDERS/BUYERS - Please use a seller/buyer contract see http://www.bva.co.uk/news/2776.aspx |

PYRENEAN SHEEPDOG (PASTORAL GROUP) May carry the mdr-1 gene - should be TESTED KC registrations: 1993=14; 94=11; 95=8; 96=13; 97=22; 98=19; 99=19; 2000=10; 01=28; 02=7 mean score = 14 fairly good hips; borderline hip dysplasia; serious hip dysplasia Buy puppies from parents with scores less than the mean score Check parental hip scores when buying a pup. Some have tailless gene. Check for ttemperament No Health Survey done by breed for Kennel Club A small and rare breed in the UK so no large genetic pool of information available. HIPS: H. dyplasia may occur in older dogs later in life leading to arthritis and lameness. Patellar luxation has also been known ( dislocation of kneecap). Can occur suddenly or after trauma but can be remedied. FITS (Epilepsy) has been reported may be inherited but not known. Check parental lines for disease before buying a pup. EAR & EYE:Progressive retinal atrophy (gradual loss of eyesight in middle age + found in USA but not yet reported in UK COAT: Merle coat colour can be indicative of deafness and if crossed the double merle progeny may suffer eye defects (such as small eye with 3rd eyelid visible. EYES: Collie eye anomaly (choroidal hyperplasia ) rear of eye shows folding can be found in younger dogs. Multifocal retinopathy a similar disease has also been reported. DNA tests are available . Always check that dam and sire have had clear BVA eye testing results although it may be found that breeders of this breed do not consider it a problem and dogs are not being tested). HEART: In ancestry there was recorded a developmental disorder (patent ductus arteriosus) The PS Club hope they have eradicated this but it is recommended that 4 week old puppies are tested. If purchasing a pup check test has been done. Always see the dam with her pups and possibly sire too. Make sure pups are health checked before purchase. |

Long coats do appear in the breed and these are regarded as undesirable in the show ring but it is inherited from a simple recessive gene. Two long coats cannot produce short coated progeny. Skeletal: Breed Clubs recommend hip scoring and eye testing. So far the average hip score is 13. It is also recommended not to have close matings as the gene pool is small because the breed is now on the endangered/protected register. Patella luxation (kneecap slipping) not know how it is inherited. EYE : Retinal dysplasia but not known to be in UK. The Breed Club recommends testing for JK175 found in Finland and the USA. It is a type of PRA (progressive retinal atrophy) but so far nothing definite identified. TAIL: The breed accepts all types of tail in the show ring . Just over half SVs are born without a tail in varying degrees and it is the breed with the highest incidence of tailless gene and the way this is inherited is unclear. It has been found that when a tailless SV is mated to another breed spina bifida has been found. It is therefore recommended that tailless matings are not done. Tailed dogs can also produce problem tails. Other problems : as in any breed mouth problems occur such as incorrect bites. Unilateral cryptorchids can occur (one descended testicle) Also cleft palate has been reported. Health Survey for the KC undertaken by conscientious breeders/owners of SV see :- http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/download/1633/hsswedishvallhund.pdf This breed can produce short-tailed puppies. Skeletal problems :- Hip Dysplasia (HD) has been located. 30 dogs listed as hip scored with range of 6-52 ( average 14.7 ) which is of concern. Legg Perthes disease which causes necrosis of the femoral head (sometimes confused with HD but is distinct although also polygenically controlled. Patella luxation also polygenically controlled and causes dislocation of the knee cap. Other conditions:- The ductus arteriosus is a foetal vessel running from the aorta and pulmonary artery. After birth it should regress and vanish but in some dogs it persists after birth. If this is the case, it causes weakness, heart murmurs and may result in death. Known as patent ductus arteriosus. Failure of one or both testicles to descent is not uncommon (cryptoorchidism). Cause likely to be complex genetically.
